Screening & Diagnosis for Breast Cancer

Screening is the process of searching for indications of disease, such as breast cancer, before symptoms appear. The goal of screening tests is to detect cancer at an early stage, when it is treatable and potentially curable. A screening test may detect cancer that is too small or too slow to grow. During a person's lifetime, these cancers are unlikely to cause death or illness.

  • Mammography is the most commonly used breast cancer screening test.
  • Women at high risk of breast cancer may benefit from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Certain factors influence whether a woman should be screened for breast cancer and which screening test should be used.
  • Other screening tests have been studied in clinical trials or are currently being studied.
  • Thermography of the Breast
  • Tissue collection

Clinical trials are being conducted to investigate breast cancer screening tests.
